L.O.R.O.S,
LOROS (Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice) has been established for over 20 years and has been funded, almost entirely, by monies raised by volunteers and Sponsorship. LOROS cares for up to 31 terminally ill patients at their Hospice off Groby Road in Leicester. The Staff also give support to patients and their families, not only those at the Hospice, but also those who can remain in their own homes.
In all, about 1000 volunteers give their time to help in the 21 LOROS shops scattered around Leicestershire and Rutland, plus another 400 based at the Hospice itself helping the paid Staff and thereby saving more money that can be used to help patients and their families. There is also a weekly Lottery. . . . numerous fund-raising events throughout each year by Companies, Groups and Individuals . . . . and a Warehouse that receives, sorts and distributes unwanted items for the shops to sell on. . . .all to raise more money. . .and, for every £1 raised, 98p goes towards the high costs of patient care.
Our local effort is a regular, quarterly Stamp Fair at Newbold Verdon. Roger Simmons "takes-in" any unwanted collections of Postage Stamps, Postcards and Cigarette cards. . .he sorts, values and catalogues them and then they are offered for sale at St James Church Hall, Newbold Verdon. . . .the next sale is on Sunday 25th November. . . . between 10am and 3 pm, with all the proceeds going to LOROS.
There is soon to be a £2,000,000 extension built to provide more side rooms to give the patients and their families more privacy and this will, of course, need furnishing and equipping.
If you can help in any way or have stamps that you no longer require and would like to donate, please contact
Roger Simmons at 34, Arnolds Crescent, Newbold Verdon. . or phone him on 01455 822645.
Thank you.
